Whippen Flange Problem (Upright Piano)
Piano Maintenance Tips

1. Environmental conditions
The piano is very sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, especially its wood and felt materials. The humidity of the piano room should be maintained between 45% and 70%, and the temperature should be around 20°C. Try to avoid sudden temperature changes, as the tone will easily change and the touch may also be affected.
2. Keyboard
Use a piano brush to gently pat away any dust, then wipe with a slightly damp piano cloth, making sure no water runs down the sides of the keys.
3. Placement
The piano should be placed indoors, 10 to 15 cm away from the wall, away from windows, places with humid air, such as bathrooms and kitchens, and away from direct sunlight. The place where the piano is placed should be ventilated as much as possible, otherwise the moisture will breed and make the wood easy to breed insects and mold. The casters of the piano may cause damage to the floor when moving. Special supports can be used to fix the position, protect the floor and prevent the piano from sliding and causing accidents.
4. Piano surface
Whether cleaning a polished or buffed piano surface, you should first use a bristle brush to sweep away dust or coarse particles, and then wipe it with a soft dry cloth. It is strongly recommended not to use general furniture products containing wax or silicone, otherwise it will affect the piano surface and the cost of further treatment will be very expensive.
5. Transportation
Please keep in mind the value of your piano and only allow professional carriers to ship your piano, and please make sure that adequate insurance is included.
6. Adjustment
As your piano continues to be used, it will need regular adjustments to ensure that it performs optimally when played. Even if the piano is placed in an ideal environment, it is recommended that you perform regular adjustments.
7. Tuning
To maintain the piano's pitch at a standard level, regular tuning is necessary, at least twice a year. When tuning, the tuner will also check the piano's condition to ensure that it is in the best condition.
Warm Tips:
For grand pianos with double wheels and a stop design, the casters are actually for the convenience of moving and positioning the grand piano, but if the casters are not locked, the grand piano may move on its own. In uncontrolled situations, it may cause injury or property damage, so remember to lock the casters after moving or transporting.
Caring For Your Piano
1) Ambient Conditions
Wood and felt are highly sensitive to extreme changes in temperature and humidity. During the heating period a standard good-quality humidifier should be used to control and regulate humidity. The most favorable environment for your piano is a relative humidity ranging between 45% and 70% and a constant temperature of approximately 20˚C. Sudden fluctuations in temperature must be avoided as the tuning and regulation might be influenced negatively.
2) Keyboard
Use a slightly moistened, natural leather cloth to clean the keys. Make sure that no moisture trickles down the sides of the keys.
3) Location
Choose a place with the right atmospheric conditions, preferably against the inside wall of a room and not close to windows, outside doors and radiators or heating outlets. Special supports for the castors protect your floor covering. When not in use, you should ensure that the top of your instrument is closed, to prevent dust collecting inside.
4) Surface Treatment
Irrespective of whether high polish or satin finish, your piano should only be wiped with a soft, dry piece of cloth or a slightly moistened leather cloth. We strongly advise you to refrain from using furniture polish as it contains waxes and in some cases silicone. Any later re-treatment of the surface will then be very expensive.
5) Transport
Remember the high value of your piano and only allow specialist carriers to transport your piano. Make sure that you have adequate insurance coverage.
6) Regulation
Regulation is the adjustment of the action and should be carried out at regular intervals, in order to ensure an optimal uniformity of touch and play. Even if ambient conditions are satisfactory, regulations should be carried out at regular intervals.
7) Tuning
The proper pitch (440 Hz = concert pitch a1) is set by stretching the strings. We recommend frequent tuning during the first year, as the material must adapt to the immense tension. It takes a year for tuning to “settle.” Afterwards your piano should be tuned at least twice a year. The pitch should be kept at a constant level. When the pitch is frequently lowered or raised, the instrument is much less likely to remain in tune.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
GRAND PIANOS WITH DOUBLE WHEEL CASTERS AND BRAKES
The casters allow easy movement and positioning of the grand piano. There is, however, a risk that the grand piano may move of its own accord if its casters are not locked by the brakes.
In the event of uncontrolled movement people may be injured or property damaged. It is therefore important to lock the casters of the grand piano using the brakes as soon as the instrument is in position, particularly after being transported.
